The owners didn’t hesitate to buy La Escondida when a local spontaneously decided to take them to see the house 15 years ago. Sitting at 2,000 feet, the route leading to La Escondida takes you through beautiful olive and almonds groves, dense pine forests and the occasional small pueblo. In springtime the countryside becomes a wonderful myriad of colours, covered in wild flowers with a lingering fragrance of blossom.
Being so in love with the area, the owners gradually bought more and more of the land surrounding the main house. Fifteen years on the property now sits in a rolling 500 acre estate. Its rustic yet sophisticated style runs throughout the hotel.
Having been fortunate enough to travel the world extensively, the owners wanted to use their experiences and create a hotel where they would choose to stay themselves. As soon as you walk through the doors of La Escondida you feel at home, in the heart of Spain. Our fantastic chef cooks a simple and delicious regional menu, using the freshest local ingredients together with hand-picked fruit and vegetables from our own garden. Although the sun shines for 300 days a year, on colder evenings we eat in our traditional restaurant with original beams, stone walls and a roaring fire. In the sunshine, we eat outside on our stunning terraces under big blue skies and with breath-taking views of the valley; most lunches and dinners turn into long and relaxing affairs. Between meals, visit our experienced spa therapists, choose from the many activities on our doorstep or indulge in a lazy day by our beautiful indoor (heated) and outdoor swimming pools.
The woodlands are very rich in animal life - wild boar, deer and the rare Iberian lynx roam the land and an abundance of different varieties of bird life. The hunting season is May to October and if you wish you can try your hand with our local experts. Although the eye is naturally drawn to the beautiful surroundings don't forget to look up now and again to spot the golden eagles who often look down on us from the sky above; a species very rarely seen in Europe.
Located in the community of Penaguila, 15 minutes from the town of Alcoy and on the doorstep of the Font Roja National Park, the stunning land surrounding La Escondida’s estate is completely protected – it’s rare to be able to enjoy such uninterrupted views. The only sounds you are likely to hear after a peaceful night’s sleep are distant bells tinkling from the local shepherd’s goat herd.
